How TwoKeys works

Here's how TwoKeys will work when it launches. TwoKeys is built on one simple idea: anything shared needs both keys turned. Either of you can pull your key out at any time, on your own.

Joining takes two keys

  • One of you creates an account (18+ only) and sends an invite by link, QR code or a six-digit code. Invites expire after 48 hours.
  • Your partner accepts on their own device with their own login, and reads the same plain-language consent screens.
  • Your shared space only opens once you've both said yes.

Every feature has its own switch

  • Check-ins, weekly questions and location sharing are separate. You each set your own.
  • The app shows plainly what each switch shares and who sees it.
  • You can see your own consent history at any time, and changing a setting asks you to confirm it's really you.

Daily check-ins

  • Pick your mood and energy, add a one-line note if you like, and say what you need: time together, space, help with something, a hug, or to talk.
  • Your partner sees your check-in. There are no read receipts and no “last seen”.
  • Streaks belong to the couple, not to one person, so nobody gets shamed. Skipping a day carries no penalty.

Weekly honest questions

  • You choose a day and time together. You both get the same question.
  • Neither of you sees the other's answer until you've both replied.
  • Either of you can skip a question without explaining why, and skipped questions aren't shown as failures.

Location sharing, only when you choose

  • Off by default. Turning yours on never requires your partner to turn theirs on.
  • Sharing has an end time: one hour, until you arrive, eight hours, or until you turn it off.
  • You always see that it's on, and one tap stops it. Your partner just sees “Sharing stopped”.
  • No location history is kept. Your partner can ask you to share, but not more than once every six hours.

A pause button for hard moments

  • Either of you can call a 20-minute pause, with a kind default message and a time to come back to it.
  • Short scripts help you say what you need: “When ___ happened, I felt ___, and what I need is ___.”
  • A 60 to 90 second breathing exercise is built in. Scripts are being reviewed by a registered South African counsellor before launch.

Help, one tap away

  • South African support services are on the home screen and inside every hard conversation.
  • A quick-exit button jumps to a neutral screen.
  • We never track who taps a help link.

Leaving takes one key

  • Either of you can leave alone, at any time. Nobody can block, delay or approve it.
  • All sharing stops immediately and the shared space is locked for both of you.
  • You can download your own contributions first if you want to.
  • Your partner gets a neutral message: “Your shared space has been closed.” Shared data is permanently deleted within 30 days.

What TwoKeys will never do

  • No hidden apps, hidden icons or “monitoring mode”.
  • No reading your SMS, WhatsApp, email, DMs, call logs or browsing history.
  • No location without a visible indicator, and no location history.
  • No switching on a camera or microphone, and no recording calls or chats.
  • No accounts set up for someone else, and no consent given on someone else's behalf.
  • No read receipts, “last seen” or “where were you at 3pm” logs.
  • No use by or for anyone under 18.

Leaves this site straight away and opens Google. The Back button won't bring you back here.

If you need help now

You don't need to wait for TwoKeys to reach out. These South African services are free or low-cost and confidential.
